Scents of the Week: 06/27 – 06/30 (2017)

Whew! After a week’s vacation in Las Vegas, it’s time to get back in it!

We are officially in Arcanapalooza! If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you might have noticed that I’ve been keeping a super nerdy spreadsheet of my perfume collection, even breaking out a pie chart based on how many perfumes I own from each brand. Arcana perfumes are just about half of my collection! It’s one of the brands that works really well with my skin chemistry and most of the scents are incredibly appealing to me.  They’re also one of the first few brands I ever purchased and the love affair continues to this day…

Tuesday, 06/27

Haus of Gloi Amber & Neroli (Haus Birthday 2016): Neroli, ylang ylang, hawaiian white ginger flower.
This one is pretty simple: haus amber (a favorite) and neroli. It’s a little peppery, a little powdery, all warmed by the amber. This is nice but I have other neroli perfumes that I love a bit more.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Southern Comforts Red Umbrella (March 2017 charity): Vanilla, black tea, espresso, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, peppercorn, & ginger.
This smells like a chai with lots of pepper. I mean, a lot of pepper. It overwhelms the perfume for me unfortunately.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Wednesday, 06/28

Arcana Advice from a Caterpillar (Resurrection 2017): Disappear into Wonderland with this mind-altering blend of tart lime peel, sugared coconut, ripe berries, clove bud, allspice, yellow peach, and a faint wisp of Indonesian patchouli.
First whiff: almost like a cola: tart but dark. Lime, berries, and clove are the strongest with patchouli lingering at the end. The clove gets stronger as it dries down. Patchouli surprisingly does not overtake this at any point. Some of the syrupy peach and coconut comes out after it dries. It settles into a clove-forward perfume with peach, lime, and a hint of coconut and patchouli.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Derby Lollies (Holiday 2012): Strawberry, candied lime, pink pepper, sweet milk, ylang ylang, vanilla, and a hint of peppermint. A Soap Box Company exclusive fragrance.
Strawberry is more prominent upon application. As it dries: primarily lime, mint, ylang ylang. Some ripe strawberry on the back end. Refreshing and summery!
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Fugue (Arcana Classic): An amnesiac haze of dark clove, spiced amber, sugary milk, white musk, nutmeg, and a drop of aged patchouli.

Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Lady Posh (The Turn of the Wheel 2009): Created exclusively for Posh Brats, an ultra feminine blend of pink champagne, Devonshire cream, rich vanilla, sugar cubes, white musk, skin musk, pink pepper, teatime scones, a little splash of citrus, and a tiny scattering of the most gourmand flowers: creamy gardenia, whitestem milkweed, sweet osmanthus, and golden calla lily.
Very complex but pretty. Immediately: creamy sweet vanilla. As it dries, a cookie note comes out, as does the champagne. There’s some musk in the background. It’s not heavily floral but enough to add a little extra bloom at the back end. The citrus peeks out to brighten it up. The dry champagne note gets stronger on drydown.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Little Lully (Queens of Snow and Air 2013): Tender new blossoms of lily of the valley and honeysuckle are kissed with coconut milk, copaiba balsam, and butter CO2 extract.
[See notebook]
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Puppy Kisses (Arcana Classic): The essence of pink sandpapery tongues, silky ears, and sleepy little sighs. A batter of rich cream, soft coconut milk, rice syrup, copaiba balsam, massoia bark and milky pearl musk is gently licked with sweet peppermint, sugared bayberry, and the tiniest smooches of Oregon lavender and Dalmatian sage.

Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Star Dark (Yule 2016): An exotic gourmand blend of blackest chocolate, vanilla pod, French cocoa absolute, cinnamon creme, pumpkin skin, a hint of pink pepper, and a shot of smoking frankincense.
Cinnamon, chocolate, pepper, and frankincense. This is very smooth and dark! I normally don’t go right to chocolate scents but this one is so delicious and realistic.  The frankincense adds a lovely bit of citrus to lighten the milky creaminess.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Thursday, 06/29

Arcana Gideon (Lady Justice 2015): Inspired by a spunky orange tabby kitten named after Gideon v. Wainwright. Apricot, golden amber, and a saucerful of cream.
Warm apricot with a touch of cream. This is cozy and soft.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Righteous Uterus (Valentine’s 2017): A power blend of fresh ginger root, bergamot peel, black vanilla, spruce branches, balsam of Peru, and sparkling water rests on a base of unbreakable sandalwood and corporeal amber.
Ginger, sweet vanilla, amber. It’s a little woodsy, a little sweet, and there is a “cool” element to it, kind of like those Japanese sodas. It’s not a super strong scent.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana This Is Not the Carnival (GWP – Resurrection 2017): Arcana’s Witches Win a Plush Zebra at the Carnival blend (raspberry-flavored cotton candy, bubble gum, vanilla taffy, rain, gin martinis sipped from a silver flask) is enchanted with pistachio, sugared coconut, and spring tuberose.
Smells like a candy vodka drink. Very fruity, very fake.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Arcana Old Year’s Night (Curmudgeonly Merrymakers Winter 2011): Black coconut, fresh ginger, champagne, vanilla, massoia bark, skin musk, peru balsam, sugarcane, ecru musk, and the merest whiffs of icy bergamot and frozen pear.
Mostly milky creaminess, musk, and vanilla. A hint of something bubbly and tart. The champagne comes out as it dries, as does something vaguely citrusy… pear/ginger maybe?
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Arcana Coquette (Prynne Part II Valentine’s 2016): A flirty blend of honeyed strawberries, pink cotton candy, Tahitian vanilla, French cognac absolute, and balsam of Peru.
Wet: Strawberry cotton candy. Warm tangy note comes out as it dries. This winds up smelling like a fake strawberry cotton candy cocktail.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Friday, 06/30

Arcana Draco (Summer Constellation 2015):The bold dragon who stood sentry over Hera’s golden apples in the garden of the Hesperides. Crisp apples, black amber resin, pineapple, black tea, and cognac absolute.
This is one of my favorite apple scents: fresh juicy apple enhanced by pineapple. There’s a bit of a dry warmth behind the sweet fruit notes. The fruit mellows out a bit as it dries, balancing the scent out.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Glittering White (Yule 2015): Cold peppermint settling into a heart of sugar cookies, marshmallows, white chocolate, and vanilla musk.
This is 100% white chocolate peppermint bark, the delicious kind that pops up every holiday season. This smells of freshly baked goods with a wintery peppermint that doesn’t veer into toothpaste. Creamy and minty!
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Krampus Craves (Yule 2015): Black vanilla and creamy eggnog are spiked with bright blood orange and our Holy Terror blend (burning frankincense, sandalwood, deep myrrh, dusty beeswax candles).
Wet: blood orange! As it dries: Holy Terror peeks out and some of the cinnamon notes from eggnog come through. There’s a creaminess underlying the scent but it smells like one of those elaborate decorative centerpieces with dried citrus tucked into the dark corner of a giant old church.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Last Judgment (Hieronymus Bosch): Holy resins of frankincense and myrrh with smudgy, tobacco-laced vanilla, amber, and labdanum absolute.
Tangy lemony frankincense and the tangy medicinal smoky scent of myrrh. There is some amber and vanilla to smooth it out and add some depth. As it dries, I get more of the sweet tobacco note.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Lime (Layering Note):Part of our Layering Note line, this is the scent of a bright, juicy lime.
This is a simple realistic lime with a hint of sugar. I’m not too keen on layering perfumes just yet but this gets the creative juices flowing.  This is also nice enough to wear on its own.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Pumpkins Crave Terror (Ravenous II 2015): Holy Terror (burning frankincense, sandalwood, deep myrrh, and dusty beeswax candles) with glowing pumpkin and a small dash of pie spices.
A favorite pumpkin scent for fall. A bit of pumpkin pie and Holy Terror! Wet: all pumpkin pie, very realistic. Holy Terror comes out on drydown. This is still obviously a pumpkin pie scent but isn’t too in-your-face about it.  (I’m not a huge pumpkin spice fan so this is a nice nod to fall without being too “HAPPY THANKSGIVING!”)
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Snug (Yule 2016): Dark honey amber, marshmallow, and the glow of beeswax candles.
Smooth honeyed amber with white sugar. The honey is not too cloying and the amber is the star of the show. The beeswax note is subtle but there, a soft waxy scent following the amber and honey. This is completely up my alley!
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Arcana Witches Draw Down the Moon (Hallowe’en 2016): Infused vanilla oleoresin with sweet maple creme, maple sugar, dry Madagascan vanilla, and moon-white marshmallow.
Wet: maple! Yummy creamy maple. As it dries, a sticky bitter scent comes out, almost like burnt rubber but not as strong — oleoresin? I like it because it’s not super sweet but the oleoresin is a bit overpowering. Other maple scents, like Blooddrop’s Maple Syrup simplicity, smell lovely in the bottle but are incredibly cloying on my skin.  The resinous note is a good grounding base for the maple.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Phew!! Can you tell I’m super motivated to finish my perfume testing project?
