Scents of the Week: 06/05 – 06/09 (2017)

Also known as the last of the BPALs and a fresh mix of random perfumes!

Sunday, 06/04

BPAL Adventure with Bandits in a Kago (Lupercalia 2017): Nectarine and pearl peach, white frankincense, and gardenia.
Let’s be honest: there’s nothing here I don’t love.  I knew this would be a favorite right off the bat and it didn’t disappoint.  The sweet juicy syrupy peach pairs wonderfully with gardenia. There’s a bit of frankincense to add some brightness and lift the scent.  I’m not sure exactly what white frankincense smells like but it seems like a much lighter version of the frankincense I know and love.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

BPAL Pink Moon (Lunacy 2005): The name of this moon refers to the color of wild ground phlox, a primary component of this Lunacy Blend, which is one of the most widespread floral signposts of springtime in North America. This Lunar blend is soft with phlox, tulip, daffodil, dogwood and muscari, dusted with pink sugar and honey, and a touch of the first strawberries of the season.
Yes! Yes! So much yes! With Florida summer in full swing, I’ve been all about the strawberry perfumes lately and this is a beautiful mix of fruit and floral. I immediately get sugared strawberries, like the dark red ones verging on being overripe.  A soft floral floats in the background; I can’t pin it down to any one of the specific flowers but it’s very pretty without overpowering. This is a soft feminine scent.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

BPTP Wicked Matriarch (Yule 2013): Whether you’re flipping through poisoned apple recipes on Pinterest, researching dilapidated towers to house irritating princesses, or simply interested in a sporting match of croquet, dab a little of our perfume behind each ear, and you’ll be ready to destroy all those who stand in your way. Velvet red roses, mimosa blossom, heady magnolia, oudh, and black patchouli draped across a regal purple musk.
As I’ve mentioned, I have to be careful with patchouli scents since my skin amps it to the extreme. This is definitely not a subtle scent and is my go-to for when I’m feeling bold and empowered.  It’s a deep, dark, dirty, sexy perfume that will take over the air around you. This is patchouli tempered with a deep, dark red floral; it’s still very patchouli-forward but the roses and magnolia alleviate some of that earthiness. Not for the faint-hearted!
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Geek Fire Labs Haunted Doll’s Head (General Catalog): A pleasant scent of antique vanilla, ruby red raspberries, crushed lilac petals, cloves and the curious scent of plumeria.
I mostly get tart, almost ripe raspberries and a bit of powdery florals. Something in this is slightly plasticky — plumeria maybe? I get virtually none of the clove or vanilla. This is nice and simple but not something I’ll keep around.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Geek Fire Labs The Goblin Masquerade (Labyrinth): As the world falls down around you, you catch the lilting notes of nectarine, lotus and orchid dancing deliriously among more somber strains of sandalwood, amber and vanilla.
An aquatic floral with fuzzy nectarine. Sandalwood and amber add a warm, exotic background to the florals. This is a very clean, fresh floral, almost like a fancy shampoo.  Again, nice and basic, good for those days when I want to keep it simple.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Tuesday, 06/06

Geek Fire Labs TARDIS Heart (Doctor Who): A rich, golden glow of amber, spiceberry, mulled fruit, creamy sandalwood and myrrh, with a gleam of nag champa. A sexy and powerful scent, for those with the strongest of hearts, brave enough to traverse the unending vastness of time and space.
Mmmm. Warm amber with a hint of berry. It’s like sipping mulled cider while sitting next to a gentleman wearing very nice cologne!
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

OHWTO Heart Flutters Valentine’s (2015): Honeysuckle, Sandalwood, Violets, White Patchouli, Vanilla, Rose, Musk, and clean Spring breezes.
Wet, this smells like a bright, clean apple musk scent. I get a bit more honeysuckle as it dries down and some red rose. The spring breeze is pretty strong. Unfortunately, this just brings to mind dryer sheets.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Wednesday, 06/07

Whipped Up Wonderful Unicorn Tears (General Catalog): Beginning with a tart, cranberry-like fragrance, with a hint of cloves & citrus notes of sugared lemon blended with sandalwood and floral orchid.
Something gets lost when this goes on my skin; it becomes sugared cranberries and lemon, without much else.  The more I sniff it, the more I like it but I think I’m going to repurpose this.  A friend recently mentioned using perfume oil in felt dryer balls and I think this would be a great candidate!  Or as a room spray.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Lou Lou’s Soaps Gidget (General Catalog): Berries, Oranges, Pears, Sugar, Vanilla, and Patchouli.
Ehhh. This is mostly pear and patchouli with a hint of fake berry. The longer it was on my skin, the more I wanted to scrub it off.  The fake berry note didn’t do this one any favors.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Lou Lou’s Soaps Spiced Pear Cake (General Catalog): Ripened Anjou pears, warm vanilla bean, butter, nutmeg, clove, and hints of apple over amber and musk.
Pear, musk, apple, and something plasticky, maybe the butter?  Maybe pear scents just aren’t for me…
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Thursday, 06/08

Alchimia Apothecary Dark Passenger (Halloween 2014): Blood orange, cypress trees, balsam, sea air, key lime pie.
I remember loving this when I first received it in an exchange but aging has definitely changed it.  I wouldn’t say it’s for the worse but it’s turned into something that isn’t unique to my collection.  It’s quite lovely though!  Salty ocean air, woodsy pine, and some dark juicy blood orange at the back end.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Possets Florida (General Catalog): Several different natural orange essences from a variety of different sources, wild musk for staying power, spices to keep it interesting and a strong a bitter sort of musk.
I bought this partly because of the name, partly because I wanted to try Possets, and partly to see if I could find an orange scent I liked.  This, sadly, is not it.  All I get is sweet orange candy. This is probably a Florida thing but it reminds me of the orange gumballs that came in the cutesy little Florida orange juice cartons. Again, it’s not bad but not for me.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

Smelly Yeti Ponyo (AFK Cosmetics Christmas in July Advent Box 2016): Coconut pulp, sweet peaches, beach air, with a dash of apricot and the barest hint of salty seaweed.
I don’t know why I convinced myself that this was meh but wow, was I wrong! I was so wrong that I wound up ordering a full size of this. It smells like a delicious beach cocktail! Coconut milk, peach, and guava with a bit of salty beach air.  Yes please!
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

I also just want to add that all three of these scents together smelled amazing!  After testing them, I hopped in my car to drive home and I just kept sniffing myself the whole way. Woodsy, orange, beach cocktail — I need to see if this exists somewhere…

Friday, 06/09

Solstice Scents Buttered Rum Mallow (Winter 2016): Rum, Marshmallow, Nutmeg, Cardamom, Clove, Butter, Cinnamon, Vanilla, Brown Sugar & All Spice.
This is pretty much exactly as described! That familiar butter rum scent with all the typical holiday spices.  It’s warm and cozy and comforting and one of the few decadent gourmet perfumes I own.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Solstice Scents Snowmint Mallow (Winter 2015): Peppermint, Vanilla Cake, Flaked Coconut, Sugar Cookies & Marshmallow Creme.
When I first applied this, it went into the destash pile. I didn’t think there was much to the scent honestly, that it was just a meh vanilla/coconut cake/peppermint scent. After a few hours, it warmed up on my skin wonderfully and, I don’t know, it just clicked.  It’s a soft coconut cake perfume with a wintry peppermint note.  It’s very cozy and delicate.
Verdict: KEEPING IT!

Solstice Scents Snowshoe Pass (Winter 2015): White Amber, White Musk, Vanilla Accord, Peppermint Cream, Cold Winds. Snowshoe Pass never blossomed on my skin.  I know so many people who love this!  It’s a nice scent but I didn’t find it to be a “love this gotta have this” item.  It’s a subtle and cozy woodsy amber vanilla.
Verdict: TOSSING IT!

  • I loved SS Buttered Rum too. And I agree about Possets Florida. Too orange candy-ish. Now I need Yeti Ponyo.
